2023 ‘Happy Wife Happy Life’ Blanco de Merlot
This is the first year I made this wine. The grapes come from the Alder Vineyard in the Sonoma Valley. Farmed organically by my friends Dan Marioni and Caleb Zielke, this vineyard is in the family.
The cuvée name is an ode to my best friend Bahman Safari. People often think we’re married and his favorite thing to say to me is “happy wife, happy life”. He is a silly billy.
We picked these grapes on September 9th, 2023. The first pick of the year for Isa Wines. I was impatient to get my harvest started and had a stroke of inspiration, in part thanks to Dani Rozman of La Onda. I tasted his Blanco de Cabernet Sauvignon in 2023 and was blown away. It’s a wine of such elegance and transcendent beauty. I highly recommend finding a bottle.
I basket pressed the Merlot immediately to minimize skin contact. The juice fermented in stainless steel tank for about 2 weeks then was transferred to barrel. The ferment was so healthy that I decided not to add any sulfur to the wine. I’m really happy with the way this wine turned out and hope you enjoy it as well.
